Curriculum/Lesson Planning

Sometimes it can be hard to decide what art projects to teach because there are so many that I love, LOL. Here's how I start my curriculum map (and trust me it does get altered and changed). This is the start of 5th Grade curriculum.

One thing that I love to begin at the beginning of the year is for every student to create a "Name Design" Sketchbook Cover and Sketchbook, This has been the great things I've ever done because:
1. Helps you learn names faster And when teaching 650+ kiddos you need a little help,
2  Gives you an idea of what they art capable of.
3. Gives them a sense of ownership and pride.
4. Helps with early finishers - they can draw in it when they're done.
5. Great place to plan and draw out ideas for projects. Especially 3-D projects.

I outline my art lessons so I can be sure to order the correct & enough supplies for the school year. Although I try to do one big order, I almost always do a second order as the year gets closer to the end. Art teachers use a lot of supplies that are consumable so it's important to plan ahead. Always order a little more of the basic supplies than you think you will need. The basics, like white and black construction paper, markers, etc... go faster than you'd expect.

When I'm designing my curriculum, I usually start outlining my curriculum with the basics - subject matter and purposes in art. I make sure that I include both 2-D and 3-D lessons. Then I create a project around each of them. I also try to use a variety of different medium so students get to experience different techniques/materials.

I don't do the same projects year after year as I think it's boring and there's so many great artists and projects you can explore. But, I will admit I have a few that I love and sometimes they get used more often, lol.

I always sort each grade level with the basics/generic lesson ideas. Every grade will do at least one of each subject matter and purpose for art as listed below:

Lesson Ideas:

1. Portrait
2. Still Life
3. Landscape
4. Functional
5. Ceremonial
6. Expressive
7. Narrative

I try to make sure that a variety of medium is used with all grade levels. Yes, even Kindergarten...because if you start them young, they'll know how to use it and the possibilities are endless.

Medium Ideas:

1. Oil Pastels
2. Chalk Pastels
3. Paint - tempera or acryllics
4. Weaving/Fabric Arts
5. Clay
6. Watercolors
7. Paper Maché or Plaster
8. Digital Art
9. Printmaking
Etc...

I have a variety of lessons in my book "The Creative Classroom" and even more posted in my TPT Shoppe.

We are saying "Good Bye" to our old room and...
"Hello" New Art Room!

The school year ended with the demolition of our old art room and the building of our new art room (final photos will be posted when it's all done).

A lot of amazing art and memories have been created in this room. I'm so excited and ready to see what new things these AMAZING artists will be creating in our NEW Art Room.

"Creepy Carrot" Animations

I just love finding FUN books to use and incoporate into art lessons. This book was the perfect inspiration for creating our Green Screen Animation Videos.  This project, I have to admit took a ton of planning, but it was so worth it. I just get a kick out of all these great little artists working so hard to create their animations.

Here's just a few of the steps we used to make this happen:

1. Read the book "The Creepy Carrot"
2. Drew our background - the bathroom scene I thought would be funny to reinact. We used charcoal pencils and grey drawing paper to stay with the BL&WH concept from the book.
3. Created our creepy carrots using polymer clay.
4. Photographed our backgrounds on the green screen boards using the iPad camera app.

5. Painted skewers for using to animate our carrrots. Just used scraps of fabric for the curtains.
6. Video'd the curtain and carrots being animated using the camera app on the iPad.
7. Using the app DoInk Green Screen, we put together our videos.
8. Uploaded them to my private YouTube account so I could print their QR Codes for them to scan and always have their animations.

Here's just a few examples of their final projects. You can click here to see one of the animated pieces.

"Grumpy Monkey" Portraits

I just love finding great books to teach with art lessons. And to top it off, this book is great when adding in emotions to artwork. When these are complete, they are absolutely hilarious and adorable.

2nd Grade "Grumpy Monkey"
There are tons of "Read-A-Louds" on YouTube of this book. I of course always purchase the book and I read this aloud to my students. But have included a read-a-loud in my lesson.

We discuss EMOTIONS and COLOR and how they can make a person feel when looking at art. I also like to introduce them to other works of art that portray emotions and we discuss them before starting this lesson.

When designing art projects, I try to be creative with technique & medium. This one is fun because they CAN NOT use a paintbrush to paint with. The kids LOVE it!

I love this little video of a student painting her artwork, lol:)

Check out this lesson on my TPT shoppe:) "Art is My Jam"!
