Fifth grade is working on some awesome "graffiti art name designs". I just love how this technique teaches so mant concepts.

1. Analogous Colors
2. Complimentary Colors
3. Blending techniques with oil pastels
4. Outlining and enhancing art with detail 
     - such a black outlines, etc...
5. Highlights and Shadows

First grade "Pete the Cat" inspired art work

Everyone's been creating some awesome art.  First grade is working on their "Pete the Cat" inspired pieces. Who doesn't love these books. They always inspire and have a moral to the story.

I just love this book: "Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses". So we created our own cats with "magic sunglasses". The only twist was, we added a rainbow because we learned to always look on the bright side. 

This was a great opportunity for first grade to learn how to blend oil pastels to create their secondary colors.

If you have access to Brain Pop, Jr., I recommend using the site to introduce students to the art work and artist Pablo Picasso (https://jr.brainpop.com).  The print (to the left) is of Picasso's original that I based this project on. Love all the bright colors. 

4th Grade Student Examples

This lesson is a good change from the basic Picasso portrait lessons that you might normally do with students. You can teach this lesson using a variety of different mediums and concepts. I chose watercolors and oil pastels because I wanted to introduce the concepts of analogous and complimentary colors to students. 

Portraits - artwork of a person, animal and/or both a person and animal.

- Elements and Principals of Art - Line, Shape, Texture, etc...

Kindergarten Art featuring Artist "Piet Mondrian"

Whenever I introduce Kindergarteners to the color wheel and elements of art, I do it in steps. I start with the primary colors (red, yellow and blue) and who better to use than Piet Mondrian. I love the simplicity of his primary color works of art. 

This lesson is a great lesson. because it introduces the following concepts and is a start to the elements of art.

1. Lines - introduce vertical and horizontal lines.

2. Color - Primary Colors (Red, Yellow and Blue).

3. Shape - Squares and Rectangles. 

4. Texture - the thick painted lines. 

When doing this lesson students are using atypical medium, such as cardboard to paint with and oil pastels. I do this so I can teach them how to use a variety of medium and that you can paint, etc... with other things beside paint brushes. 

It's also a great way to introduce a variety of new art terms.

Learning About Color

Teaching the concept of the color wheel is one of the first lessons in my art room. The reason why, is students need to learn how to mix colors, what colors compliment each other and how colors can be mixed together in a way that makes sense.

3rd Grade Color Wheels

3rd, 4th and 5th Graders are working hard learning about color and how to mix the secondary and intermediate colors using only the primary colors (red, yellow and blue). 

They are creating "Color Wheels". 

– 3rd Grade added a design to their color wheels.

4th Grade Radial Symmetry Color Wheels

– 4th Grade is designing and learning about radial symmetry as they created these color wheels. These "Radial Symmetry Color Wheels" are absolutely beautiful.  

5th Grade Margaritte Eye Color Wheels

Rene Margaritte.  Margaritte was a Belgian Surrealist artist.

1st Grade!

1st Graders are working hard learning about color and how to mix the secondary colors using only the primary colors (red, yellow and blue). We are creating "Fish Color Wheels".

These turned out so cute and I love how they are all slightly different. Amazing!
